Sunscreen basics: what SPF and broad-spectrum actually mean

Sunscreen labels can feel like a puzzle. Here's what the main terms mean.
SPF
SPF measures protection against UVB rays, the main cause of sunburn. SPF 30 filters about 97% of UVB, and SPF 50 about 98%.
Broad-spectrum
This means the product also protects against UVA rays, which reach deeper into the skin.
Mineral or chemical
Mineral filters such as zinc oxide sit on the skin. Chemical filters absorb UV light. Both work, so pick the one you'll actually wear every day.
Reapply
Reapply about every two hours outdoors, and after swimming or sweating.
